Y Bhg Dato' Tony Fernandes
AirAsia Berhad

After an illustrious career with a multinational music company, Y Bhg Dato' Tony Fernandes, together with three partners, took over an ailing domestic airline. In 2002, he pioneered the low-cost carrier phenomenon in Southeast Asia and in a mere 5 years, he expanded AirAsia Berhad's domestic destinations to most ASEAN countries, making it Asia's leading and largest low-cost airline.

Dato' Tony capitalized on technological advances to achieve many firsts including being Asia's first ticketless airline and first to introduce online bookings. From the original fleet of two, it has since grown to 62, having carried more than 40 million passengers. AirAsia has reported profits since its inception and despite rising fuel costs. It is now a public listed company with a market capitalization in excess of Ringgit 3 billion.

Swift to up the ante, Dato' Tony launched AirAsia X, one of the first airlines in the world to apply the low-cost model to long-haul flights. It is scheduled to commence flights to Europe in 2008.

With the motto "believe the unbelievable, dream the impossible and don't take no for an answer", Dato' Tony and AirAsia have received numerous international awards for their rapid and outstanding accomplishments. Dato' Tony has revolutionized life for the man on the street. @ Sept 07
