A
chemist by training, Madam Yeo has been in the oleo industry for over 30 years.
Fuelled by her passion to research and develop, she acquired a palm oil mill in
Johor in 1992, and soon, with the availability of ample supply of empty fruit
bunches (EFB), Madam Yeo diversified Ecofuture Group into the biomass industry.
Through
creativity, innovation and sheer doggedness, Madam Yeo developed a machine in
1996 to produce refined fibre from EFB. This fibre is used to manufacture downstream
products such as ECOMAT, a flexible and light mulching mat, now widely used in
Malaysian plantations for soil conditioning and for prevention of soil erosion
on hill slopes in Malaysia, the Middle East and China. After successful trials,
Ecofuture has been awarded contracts to implement desert and sandstorm control
projects in China. A new biodegradable disposable packaging product, ECOPAK, is
already attracting orders from Europe, Japan and Korea. Ever innovative, another
of her focus is to produce pulp and paper using biomass technology from EFB and
its pulp making plant is expected to begin production in 2006. Fourteen
years on, Madam Yeo listed the Group on the MESDAQ in 2005, the first agrotech
company promoting biomass technology. @ Sept 05 |
